World Animal Day 2020
  • 11:00 AM − 12:00 PM
  • Pakistan

It’s all about animals on October 04, 2020 – the World Animal Day (WAD). This is an international awareness day and puts the harm of animals caused by humans into the centre of attention. Often farm animals and pets are kept under bad conditions and neglected. It was Heinrich Zimmermann, a German-Jewish author, who made an application to initiate a day dedicated to animals, in 1931 on the convention of ecologists in Florence. He had fought for animal rights for many years. His suggestion had been effectuated in shape of World Animal Day.

Animal rights groups support the rights of animals on a global basis on World Animal Day. They should be treated like living creatures and not as products or things. A species-appropriate husbandry means to care for medical treatment, feed them, and give them enough space and love. Extremely crucious treatments like violence, neglect or too long periods of transports are blasted. Very often animal homes, shelters and animal clinics organize open house on World Animal Day. Everyone shall be encouraged to rise up against cruelty towards animals.

World Car Free Day 2020
  • 11:45 AM − 11:45 PM
  • Pakistan

World Car Free Day is celebrated on September 22, 2020. A Car-Free Day encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day. Organized events are held in some cities and countries. The event promotes improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and where shopping is within walking distance. The events, which vary by location, give motorists and commuterists an idea of their locality with fewer cars.

The 1994 Car Free Day Call set out a challenge for a city, neighborhood or group: Spend one carefully prepared day without cars, study and observe closely what exactly goes on during that day and reflect publicly and collectively on the lessons of this experience and on what might be prudently and creatively done next to build on these. Car-Free days are held in many U.S. cities, in Europe and in Japan. (With material from: Wikipedia)

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2020
  • 11:45 AM − 11:45 PM
  • Pakistan

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16, 2020. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly. This designation was made on December 19, 1994, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere which absorbs most of the Sun's UV radiation. The ozone layer absorbs 97–99% of the Sun's medium-frequency ultraviolet light, which otherwise would potentially damage exposed life forms on Earth. Ozone depletion describes two distinct but related phenomena observed since the late 1970s: a steady decline of about 4% per decade in the total volume of ozone in Earth's stratosphere, and a much larger springtime decrease in stratospheric ozone over Earth's polar regions. The latter phenomenon is referred to as the ozone hole.

The World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 08, 2020. It is a day to honor the world's ocean, celebrate the products the ocean provides. The day is observed annually. Water a Flower Day 2020
  • 11:30 AM − 11:30 PM
  • Pakistan

Water a Flower Day is celebrated on May 30, 2020. To keep your flowers alive, you have to water them. Water a Flower Day remembers you to water your flowers and is an opportunity to give them an extra sip of water to thank for their wonderful colors. To celebrate Water a Flower Day you can use a watering can or watering pot. If you don't own such a thing, simply use a bottle or maybe even a cooking pot or a mug. You could also take smaller plants or flowers directly to the sink and water them with tap water. The only important thing is to take good care of your flowers that day, so don't forget to celebrate the day and tell everyone about it, who owns flowers. Unfortunately, the creator of this day is unknown.

Fossil Fools Day 2020
  • 10:45 AM − 10:45 PM
  • Pakistan

Fossil Fools Day takes place on April 01, 2020. Fossil Fools Day is an environmental demonstration day. The name is a play on the term fossil fuels and April Fools' Day. Fossil Fools Day began in 2004 with coordinated actions across the United States and Canada. Events are held in many cities around the world. These events oppose energy derived from fossil fuels, promote education about alternative sources of energy, encourage support for climate justice, strong legislation, corporate responsibility and a clean renewable energy future.

Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum, and natural gas. This text has been taken from www.cute-calendar.com

Around the world, people use flowers for a wide range of events and functions that, cumulatively, encompass one's lifetime. People, therefore, grow flowers around their homes and dedicate entire parts of their living space to flower gardens.

Pakistan Plantation Day
  • 10:00 AM − 04:00 PM
  • Pakistan

Prime Minister Imran Khan Sunday launched a countrywide drive here to plant 10 billion trees across the country within five years to counter challenges of global warming and deforestation.

The prime minister was accompanied by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Mehmood Khan, Advisor on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam, Special Assistant to PM on Political Affairs Naeemul Haq, and authorities from the forest department.

The prime minister inaugurated the “10 Billion Tree Tsunami” drive by planting a sapling of Deodar specie at Makhniyal area where he had also kicked off “Billion Tree Tsunami” project of KP government in 2015.

The first day of the drive was observed as ‘Plant for Pakistan Day’ when around 1.5 million saplings would be planted in a single day across the country.

After launching the drive, the prime minister told the media that Pakistan would be the seventh most affected country by global warming so enhancing the forest cover was crucial.

“This is crucial for the generations to come. This is the fight for life and death,” the prime minister remarked.

He said that although this plantation season was about to end, the government would keep up striving to make this initiative a success.

The prime minister said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had planted around 1.18 billion in KP during previous term and under this drive, trees would be planted across the country, be it is plains, roadsides or any empty spaces.

Responding to a question, the prime minister said that tree plantation was not solely the government’s job rather it was the responsibility of the whole nation. “Everyone must take part in the campaign to plant trees else the land would turn into a desert as the glaciers are already melting owing to global warming,” he said.

He said that the massive plantation would also help address the challenge of growing pollution in the cities like smog.

He also said that unfortunately the timbers worth Rs200 billion were axed during one decade.

PM Khan said that the government would also spread awareness among the young generation regarding the importance of trees and forests by inculcating the subject in educational curriculum.

Earlier, talking to APP, Advisor Malik Amin Aslam said that the government would adopt the KP model to ensure the success of country’s largest ever plantation drive.

He said that around 200 plantation distribution centers had been set up to provide saplings to the people free of charge.

He said that excessive plantation was of utmost importance for the country to tackle the challenges of climate change and water shortage.

New Year Resolutions 2019
  • 11:15 AM − 11:15 AM
  • Nationwide

If we want to make this great State of Pakistan happy and prosperous, we should wholly and solely concentrate on the well-being of the people, and especially of the masses and the poor.

Everyone needs a clean and healthy environment to live but unfortunately we are the ones who are doing nothing for it and making it worst day by day. Prophet PBUH said that, “Cleanliness is half of the faith.” We as followers have to implement it in all aspects of our lives. Not only for us but our surroundings, our environment, our country, even our atmosphere.

Pakistan is among the twelve countries suffering badly from pollution. We are the reason for it. Human activities like burning of fossil fuels, throwing trash on road sides, deforestation, excessive use of vehicles and electric appliances, misuse of pesticides, industrial waste all are increasing green house gases in atmosphere which is the main cause of global warming.

International Mountains Day
  • 02:30 PM − 02:30 PM
  • Worldwide

Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger and migration

Almost one billion people live in mountain areas, and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation, over exploitation and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, both for mountain communities and the rest of the world.

Mountains are early indicators of climate change and as global climate continues to warm, mountain people — some of the world’s hungriest and poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people. Mountain communities, however, have a wealth of knowledge and strategies accumulated over generations, on how to adapt to climate variability.

Climate change, climate variability and climate-induced disasters, combined with political, economic and social marginalization, increase the vulnerability of mountain peoples to food shortages and extreme poverty. Currently, about 39 percent of the mountain population in developing countries, or 329 million people, is estimated to be vulnerable to food insecurity.

World Soil Day
  • 10:30 AM − 10:30 AM

World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources.

An international day to celebrate Soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, FAO has supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness raising platform. The FAO Conference unanimously endorsed World Soil Day  in June 2013 and requested its official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly.

World Fisheries Day
  • 02:15 PM − 02:15 PM
  • Nationwide

World Fisheries day is celebrated every year on November 21 throughout the world by the fisherfolk communities. Fishing communities worldwide celebrate this day through rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural programs, dramas, exhibition, music show, and demonstrations to highlight the importance of maintaining the world's fisheries..

A recent United Nations study reported that more than two-thirds of the world's fisheries have been overfished or are fully harvested and more than one third are in a state of decline because of factors such as the loss of essential fish habitats, pollution, and global warming.

The World Fisheries Day helps in highlighting the critical importance to human lives, of water and the lives it sustains, both in and out of water. Water forms a continuum, whether contained in rivers, lakes, and ocean.

Fish forms an important part of the diets of people around the world, particularly those that live near rivers, coasts and other water bodies. A number of traditional societies and communities are rallied around the occupation of fishing.

This is why a majority of human settlements, whether small villages or mega cities, are situated in close proximity to water bodies. Besides the importance of water for survival and as a means of transportation, it is also an important source of fish and aquatic protein.

But this proximity has also lead to severe ocean and coastal pollution from run-off and from domestic and industrial acticities carried out near-by. This has led to depetion of fish stocks in the immediate vicinity, requiring fishermen to fish farther and farther away from their traditional grounds.

Save Birds Day
  • 10:00 a.m − 6:00 p.m
  • Nationwide

In 2013, Environment Canada published a series of papers describing bird mortality from various human activities. The numbers are shocking. Predation by owned and feral cats causes roughly 100 to 350 million bird deaths annually. Twenty-five million birds die from striking windows each year. A similar number die from colliding with transmission lines. Every year, vehicle collisions account for about 14 million bird deaths, communication towers 221,000, and wind energy turbines kill about 45,000. These activities are not intended to kill birds. Mortality is “incidental” to the activity. These numbers are staggering and demand action, even though they are initial estimates and more scientific research would be beneficial. Nature Canada believes that it is time Canadians understand how many birds die as a direct result of our choices and actions. Together, we can save bird lives, one action and one decision at a time, day by day. We can promote positive actions, and work with all levels of society to make Canada a safer place for wild birds. Click through the tabs above to learn more about the issues threatening birds across Canada – and how you can help!

Solid Waste Management
  • 10:00 a.m − 6:00 p.m
  • Nationwide

Around the world, waste generation rates are rising. In 2017, the worlds’ cities generated 1.3 billion tonnes of solid waste per year, amounting to a footprint of 1.2 kilograms per person per day. With rapid population growth and urbanization, municipal waste generation is expected to rise to 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025. Compared to those in developed nations, residents in developing countries, especially the urban poor, are more severely impacted by unsustainably managed waste. In low and middle-income countries, waste is often disposed in unregulated dumps or openly burned. These practices create serious health, safety, and environmental consequences. Poorly managed waste serves as a breeding ground for disease vectors, contributes to global climate change through methane generation, and even promotes urban violence. Managing waste properly is essential for building sustainable and livable cities, but it remains a challenge for many developing countries and cities. Effective waste management is expensive, often comprising 20%–50% of municipal budgets. Operating this essential municipal service requires integrated systems that are efficient, sustainable, and socially supported.

International Biological Diversity
  • 10:00 a.m − 10:00 p.m

Biological diversity, very simply, refers to all of the different kinds of life on Earth. Also called biodiversity, biological diversity is often used to refer to the total number of different species on Earth. A collection of this biodiversity would include human beings, Bengal tigers, sugar maples, oyster mushrooms, bacteria, and the millions of other living organisms found on Earth. Conservative estimates of the number of species on Earth range from 5 to7 million but some scientists estimate as many as 30 million! With only about 1.6 to 2 million of these species having been studied (many only at the most basic level) and given a name, much still needs to be learned about the diversity of life on Earth

GLOBAL RECYCLING
  • 10:00 a.m − 6:00 p.m
  • Nationwide

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognize, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a Day for the world to come together, and put the planet first. Our mission is twofold: To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined up approach, to recycling is urgently needed. To ask people across the planet to think resource, and not waste, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens we simply won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve. It is widely understood, and indeed it is at the heart of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, that climate change is the major, overriding, environmental issue of our time. Collectively, we have to take urgent action. Recycling (whether industrial or at home) saves more CO2 emissions each year than those generated by the entire aviation industry, while simultaneously protecting the earth’s valuable natural resources. By combining as many voices and efforts as possible on a single day, the aim has been simple: to drive awareness and to push the urgent need to recycle more effectively around the world, to assure the future of our planet

Recycling can prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air pollution (from incineration), and water pollution (from landfilling).
